Karwar: The agitation by contract workers of Nuclear Power Corporation Limited (NPCL) demanding continuation of their special allowance entered fourth day at Kaiga on Monday .
The agitators complained that the NPCL has decided to stop giving 25 per cent special allowance to them from next month. “The NCPL officials had promised us that they will take a decision on the issue at August 18 meeting, but they failed to hold a meeting on that day. Therefore, we have decided to continue the agitation till they hold a meeting. The company is making profits still paying meager wages, they complained.
According to the a senior official at Kaiga Plant, “The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India has objected to giving special allowance to the contract/daily workers and advised the NPCL boards across India not to give the same as the wage of such workers has exceeded the amount fixed under the Central and state governments’ daily wage policy from 2012 onwards,"
The Board has the power to decide whether to continue or not to continue the special and transport allowances. It will take a decision on the same at a meeting to be held on August 24, he added.
Meanwhile, the Board has requested the protesting employees to cooperate with it and not to boycott work. But, the workers chose to continue their agitation.
In the meantime, the ongoing protest has not affected power generation, claimed officials at Kaiga plant.
