Bhatkal: The coastal region of Karnataka is witnessing a distressing rise in daily suicide cases, raising apprehension among the local populace. Monday marked a somber day with six reported suicide incidents across different areas, intensifying the urgency for comprehensive measures to address this growing concern.

In Puttur taluk of Dakshina Kannada district, three tragic incidents unfolded on the same day. Pritam Gowda, a manager at the Parivar Cooperative Society in Sullia, took his own life by jumping into a well in Badgannur village. Meanwhile, in Madannuru village, Shankar Madannuru, a 48-year-old member of Ariyadka Gram Panchayat, ended his life by hanging himself at home, driven by financial distress. His wife, Vinita, has filed a case at Sampiya police station regarding the incident. The third case in Puttur involved Prakash Shetty, a hardworking laborer from Aryapu Gram, who tragically chose to end his life by hanging. The Sampiya Police Station has initiated an investigation into this incident.

Moving to Ullal in Dakshina Kannada, the fourth case involved Naveen (43 years), who reportedly jumped into a well at Kumpal Hanuman Nagar. The motive behind Naveen's suicide remains unclear at this point.

In Udupi district, a debt-ridden fish trader named Uday (47 years) from Kota-tattu took his own life in Bijadi village, Kundapur taluk. Kundapur police have registered a case in connection with this tragic incident.

The sixth and final case on that fateful Monday came from Uttara Kannada district, where Lakshmi Hanumanth Gowda (48 years) ended her life by hanging in Manki, Honavar taluk. According to the police complaint, Lakshmi was battling mental distress, which ultimately led to her tragic decision.

This unsettling trend follows closely on the heels of a heartbreaking incident on Saturday, November 26, in Tumkur, where five members of the same family, including three innocent children, took their lives due to overwhelming debt burdens.

Experts emphasize the imperative to identify individuals in distress, proactively addressing their challenges. They stress the importance of raising public awareness about suicide, advocating the idea that each person has only one life. Encouraging everyone to cherish life, experts recommend facing difficulties by seeking support from friends, relatives or reaching out to communtiy leaders or social workers rather than resorting to the tragic decision of ending one's own life, or that of children. By fostering a culture of open communication and seeking help, One can collectively work towards preventing such heartbreaking incidents and promoting mental well-being in the community.
