33% Reservation for women: Will women secure MLA positions in two Uttara Kannada constituencies, including Bhatkal?

Bhatkal: The draft legislation proposing a 33% reservation of seats for women in Assemblies and Parliament has been introduced in the Lok Sabha. If passed by both Houses, this move is set to increase the representation of women in the Karnataka Assembly. An estimate suggests that with all political parties adhering to this reservation law, the number of women in the 224-member Karnataka state assembly would range from 74 to 75. Consequently, out of the 6 assembly seats in the Uttara Kannada district, 2 seats will be reserved for women.

The ratio of women voters stands at 989 per 1000 eligible male voters in the state assembly elections. During polling, the turnout of women is on par with men. When calculated in terms of percentage, women account for 72.7% of the turnout, slightly lower than the 73.68% turnout of men. However, despite this, the recent assembly election saw only a 4% representation of women members, with just one woman included in the ministry.

Given this context and considering the current scenario in Uttara Kannada district, specifically focusing on the number of women voters and polling patterns, it is likely that two seats will be allotted from the Karwar, Kumta, Bhatkal, and Sirsi constituencies. This suggests a high probability of a female candidate from the Bhatkal constituency securing a position in the assembly in the upcoming elections.
