Bhatkal: World Cancer Day is celebrated on February 4 every year. It is estimated that the number of new cancer cases in India will be around 2.6 million by 2040. World Cancer Day is an attempt to raise awareness about cancer among the public with the aim of treating this deadly disease before it reaches its later stages and taking preventive measures to avoid it.

In Bhatkal, an awareness rally was organized on February 5, following World Cancer Day. The event commenced with the inauguration by Uttara Kannada District In-charge Minister Mankal Vaidya, who lit the lamp at Bhatkal Taluk Government Hospital.

During his address, Minister Mankal Vaidya shared information stating that approximately three percent of the population in Bhatkal Taluk is affected by cancer. Given the estimated population of two lakhs, this implies that around six thousand people are diagnosed with cancer. He emphasized the lack of awareness leading to delayed treatment and encouraged people to become more vigilant. Minister Vaidya reassured the public that cancer is no longer an incurable disease, and timely treatment is possible. He urged individuals not to fear and neglect it but to prioritize timely treatment and prevention.

Participants in the rally carried various signs to educate and mobilize the community, emphasizing the importance of combating cancer through early detection, adopting healthy lifestyles, and supporting those affected.
