Bhatkal: To combat the menace of dengue and other diseases, a multifaceted approach is being implemented in the region. Fogging operations are underway in various areas of the taluk to eliminate mosquito infestations, and concerted efforts are being made to prevent mosquito breeding.

In line with these efforts, the Executive Engineer of the Underground Drainage (UGD) Department, based in Karwar, visited Bhatkal's Ghausia Street on Friday. During the inspection, particular attention was given to the pumping station, as well as measures to prevent the discharge of water into the Sharabi River from the wet well.

Ghausia Street has been a focal point, as it serves as an entry point for sewage effluents into the wells and the unprocessed drainage that eventually flows into the nearby Sharabi River. Preventing such water from entering the wells is vital to curbing potential mosquito breeding in the entire area traversed by the river. Furthermore, the pollution in the river poses a risk of disease transmission in the surrounding areas. Recognizing this critical situation, the taluk administration is fully committed to preventing the release of sewage into the river, ensuring that diseases do not proliferate further.

In a recent meeting at the Municipality, the Assistant Commissioner instructed the Municipal Chief Officer to inform the UGD Executive Engineer in Karwar about the current state of the UGD system in Bhatkal and emphasize the need for rectification. A report has been requested within two days. Municipal Chief Officer Neelkanth Mesta confirmed that a formal request has been submitted to the UGD Executive Engineer regarding these concerns.
