Bhatkal: Continuous heavy rain from Monday midnight through Tuesday caused significant damage across various areas of Bhatkal taluk.

While intermittent rain had been falling since Monday, the heavy downpour that began around 3 AM on Tuesday resulted in waterlogging on the National Highway. In Shirali, Mood Bhatkal, Taland, and Poorvarga, water entered several houses, causing severe inconvenience to the residents.

Again, around 6 AM on Tuesday, heavy waterlogging was observed at Ranginkatte and Shamsuddin Circle on the National Highway, turning the roads into ponds. Additionally, reports of house walls and roofs collapsing in various areas have also been received.

In Bailur, the house of Girija Nityanand Shirugar was damaged. Similarly, in Kaikini’s Janta Colony, the house of Madhav Kuppya Devadiga, in Hadeen the house of Maadi Durappa Naik, in Asarkeri the house of Sharada Honnappa Naik, in Tagargod the house of Khan Abdul Rauf, and in Kitre the house of Masti Gonda suffered severe damage. Additionally, the compound wall of a temple owned by Vigneshwar Bhat in Kotakanda also collapsed, causing further damage.

Although the rain appeared to slow down by Tuesday evening around 7 PM, it was observed that whenever the rain starts again, it falls with such intensity that the roads are quickly flooded within moments.

According to official sources, Bhatkal recorded 128.8 mm of rain from 8 AM on Monday to 8 AM on Tuesday. So far this year, the total recorded rainfall stands at 4898.6 mm.
