Bhatkal: The delayed arrival of the monsoon provided some relief to the people after enduring intense heat. However, their respite was short-lived as numerous newly constructed roads in the area suffered significant damage just before the monsoon. The roads were left broken and filled with soil, resulting in muddy conditions in some places while in others, the soil was washed away, turning the broken roads into rainwater drains. This situation has created significant difficulties for both vehicles and pedestrians attempting to navigate through these sections
The affected areas include Bunder road first cross, Kogti, Muscat Colony, Salman Abad, Abdul Bari Street, Makhdoom Colony within the Bhatkal Municipal Limits, as well as Azad Nagar and various internal roads adjacent to it. The issue also extends to Hindu Colony and Hurlisal in Jali patan Panchayat Limits, along with several internal roads in Heble Panchayat Limits.
Upper Areas' Wells: Vulnerable to Sewage Water Infiltration?: Concerns about sewage water accumulation in upper areas have also emerged. Due to substandard UGD works, many wells in the older neighborhoods of Bhatkal have been transformed into sewers, contaminating the water that was once used for drinking purposes. Unfortunately, it appears that the same fate awaits the upper areas.
The UGD work in the upper areas, which has been ongoing for two years, remains incomplete. The pipes laid beneath the roads have not yet been connected to the sewerage system. Nonetheless, water has already started leaking from the UGD manholes with the onset of the rains. This revelation sheds light on the poor quality of the new infrastructure.
The discovery of water leakage from a manhole near Muzmmil Masjid in Hindu Colony, under Jali pattan Panchayat limits, raises questions about blockages in the pipes before the drainage connection was even established.
The current flow of rainwater from manholes raises concerns about potential blockages in the future when the UGD connection is established. The possible contamination of wells in the surrounding areas due to sewer water is a pressing issue. Local residents are questioning the approval of UGD works in the upper areas, especially considering the destruction caused by previous UGD projects in old streets and the damage to wells along the Sharabi river. The accountability for any similar fate that may befall the wells in the upper areas is now being questioned.
