Karwar: In the past nine years, the National Highway Four lane project undertaken by the IRB company remains incomplete, and the completed sections of the road are of substandard quality. The rising number of road accidents is attributed to these subpar works, according to the Minister for Fisheries, Ports, and Inland Transport, Mankal Vaidya.

During a conversation with reporters in Karwar, Mankal Vaidya, who also holds the position of Uttara Kannada district in-charge minister, expressed concerns about the situation. He pointed out that despite incomplete and substandard work, the involved parties continue to profit from toll gates.

Vaidya further stated that on a national scale, certain influential entities are acting with impunity, prioritizing their own interests while disregarding others. This behavior extends to collecting toll fees. However, he stressed the need to put an end to this practice. He acknowledged that their audacity has grown due to our complacency and emphasized the necessity to combat this issue vigorously. Vaidya noted that communication has been sent to the central government outlining the subpar and unfinished state of the National Highway. The authorities have been informed that completion of the National Highway Four lane work should precede toll collection, in line with the agreement. However, as of now, there has been no response. He issued a warning to the IRB company, urging them to execute the national highway project to proper standards or consider stepping aside if they are unwilling to meet these standards.

Addressing the establishment of a multi-specialty hospital in the district, Vaidya revealed plans to elevate the Karwar Institute of Medical Science (KRIMS) to a multi-specialty hospital. Additionally, efforts are underway to establish another multi-specialty hospital in Honnavar for the convenience of the public.

Discussing the matter of individuals residing on forest encroachment lands, Vaidya assured that the government will make a fair decision regarding land rights for encroachers. He emphasized the importance of balancing environmental conservation with developmental initiatives.

In regards to the establishment of an industrial colony in Kumta, Vaidya clarified that the project is set to commence, with a three-acre plot of land already identified for this purpose.

Vaidya provided an update on sand mining, indicating that action to initiate sand mining will be undertaken by the end of September.
