Senior social worker Syed Hasan Barmavar passes away in Bhatkal

Bhatkal: Syed Hasan Barmavar (73), a senior and noted social worker from the coastal town of Bhatkal in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district, passed away on Wednesday afternoon following a brief illness, family sources said.

Barmavar had been unwell for the past few days and breathed his last despite undergoing treatment, relatives added.

A prominent figure in both social and political spheres, Barmavar had served as a member of the Bhatkal Town Municipal Council and was associated with the Janata Dal, where he held the post of district president of its minority wing. Known to be part of the broader Janata Parivar, he maintained cordial relations with several senior political leaders, including former Karnataka minister R.V. Deshpande and Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti.

In the social sector, Barmavar played a key role as a founding member of several institutions, including the Islamic Welfare Society, Welfare Hospital and Shams School. He was instrumental in facilitating land for the New Shams School in Jamiabad, contributing significantly to educational development in the region. He was also actively involved in the welfare activities of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind.

Widely respected for his philanthropic work, Barmavar dedicated much of his life to social service and was known for extending support to the underprivileged, including helping many poor families build homes. He was regarded as a person who never turned away those seeking assistance.
Condolences poured in from various quarters following his demise.

Among those who expressed grief were Maulana Syed Zubair S.M., president of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Bhatkal unit; Syed Shakeel S.M. of the Islamic Welfare Society; Nazeer Ahmed Qazi of Shams School; Inayatullah Shabandri, president of Tanzeem; Satish Kumar, president of the Bhatkal Citizens’ Forum; and M.R. Manvi, honorary president of the Bhatkal Taluka Working Journalists’ Association, along with several other prominent personalities.
