Bhatkal – In a shocking turn of events, a man who filed a police complaint about a robbery has been arrested for committing the crime himself. The accused, identified as 46-year-old Tajammul Hussain Askari, allegedly disguised himself as a thief and robbed his own 92-year-old grandmother in Bhatkal’s Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Road area.

It is to be recalled that the incident took place during the early hours of Saturday, March 15. The accused left home under the pretense of going to tajammul.jpgthe mosque for Fajr prayers but soon returned wearing a mask and forcibly snatched gold ornaments from his grandmother.

The Bhatkal Town Police, led by Sub-Inspector Naveen Naik, launched an investigation and arrested the accused on Wednesday.

The robbery occurred while the accused’s parents were engaged in prayers in another room. The elderly woman reported that the intruder entered through the back door, covered her mouth, and attempted to strangle her when she tried to scream for help. CCTV footage from the area confirmed that the entire crime was carried out within four minutes, with the suspect escaping without any interruption.

In a surprising twist, the accused himself had lodged a police complaint on behalf of his grandmother, pretending to assist in the investigation. However, as the police examined the evidence, they uncovered his involvement and took him into custody.

Family sources revealed that Tajammul Hussain has admitted to committing the crime. Initially, he remained at home after the robbery but fled two days later upon suspecting that the police were closing in on him. His family later convinced him to return to Bhatkal, after which he was immediately apprehended.

Further investigations revealed that this was not the first such incident involving the accused. Around eight months ago, he had attempted a similar theft, but the family chose to resolve the matter privately without involving the police.

The theft, which occurred on Saturday during the holy month of Ramadan, has caused concern among residents. The news quickly spread on social media, with citizens urging each other to remain vigilant while going for prayers.
