Udaipur: Tensions flared in Udaipur on Monday when BJP MLA Vishvaraj Singh, recently anointed as the titular head of the Mewar royal family, was denied entry into the City Palace by his uncle and cousin, Shreeji Arvind Singh Mewar. The denial, following public notices issued earlier by Arvind Singh, sparked clashes outside the palace, leaving three people injured.
Vishvaraj Singh was crowned at Chittorgarh Fort earlier in the day, succeeding his late father, Mahendra Singh Mewar. However, a lingering family feud overshadowed the occasion. Arvind Singh, who chairs the Shree Eklingji Trust managing the palace and the family temple, had warned against Vishvaraj's planned ceremonial visits, citing legal and security concerns.
Supporters of Vishvaraj Singh, frustrated by barricades and heavy police deployment, broke through in an attempt to storm the palace gates, leading to stone-pelting and chaos. Senior officials, including Udaipur Collector Arvind Poswal and SP Yogesh Goyal, intervened, but talks between the feuding sides failed to reach a resolution.
Vishvaraj Singh condemned the clashes, calling the denial of entry unjust, while police maintained a heavy presence to prevent further escalation. The situation remained tense but under control, with authorities recommending the appointment of a receiver for disputed areas within the palace.
