Construction of breakwater at Karwar port approved

Karwar: The state government has given its nod to release Rs 125 crore for construction of 820-metre north breakwater at Karwar port. Office of the Department of Public Works, Ports and Inland Water Transport has proposed the project to facilitate more number of ships.

At present, the Karwar port has only 250-meter west breakwater. Under the second phase development project, another 145-meter is being constructed on the west side. But, there was no breakwater at north side.

Karwar port is one of the important ports in the state and it is acclaimed as one of the best natural all-weather port. All commodities, including petroleum products and palm oil, are being imported from the port. With the government’s approval for constructing 820-meter long breakwater, it will help the port increase its business activities. 

Apart from this, four new births will be constructed to accommodate more number of ships in the port.

Assistant executive engineer of Karwar port Rajkumar Hede told reporters that we had sent a proposal of Rs 125 crore to the government for construction of north breakwater near the children’s garden. Recently, the government gave its nod for the same. The work will commence once the tender process is over, he added.
