Bengaluru: In yet another tragic road accident on the outskirts of Bengaluru, five young men were killed after the car they were travelling in jumped the median and rammed into a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus near the Jindal flyover at Nelamangala late Saturday night.
The accident occurred around 11:30 pm within the limits of the Madanayakanahalli Police Station.
According to preliminary reports, the victims were travelling in an Indica car from Tumakuru towards Bengaluru when the driver allegedly lost control. The car reportedly crossed the divider in a dramatic manner and collided head-on with a KSRTC bus heading in the opposite direction towards Tumakuru.
All five occupants of the car died in the mishap. Four of them were killed on the spot, while the critically injured driver succumbed to injuries later at the hospital.
The deceased have been identified as Durga Prasad (20), Keshav (19), Lalit (22), Harshit (20), and another youth whose identity was initially yet to be confirmed.
In another report, Harshit and Nikhit, both said to be from Doddaballapur, were among the victims. Police said identification of some of the deceased was still underway.
Harshit was reportedly a second-year degree student at Sai Vidya College in Rajanukunte. He had reportedly left home around 8:30 pm, telling his family he would return after meeting a friend.
The impact of the collision was severe. The car was completely mangled, while the front portion of the bus was damaged.
However, all passengers aboard the bus — reported to be between 42 and 45 in number — escaped unhurt.
The bodies were shifted to Nelamangala Government Hospital for post-mortem. A case has been registered, and police suspect overspeeding to be the primary cause of the accident.
The youths, said to be friends from Doddaballapur, were reportedly on a late-night outing when the tragedy occurred.
The incident comes just days after another horrific crash near Hoskote in Bengaluru Rural district claimed seven lives, including students, in a multi-vehicle collision on the Hoskote–Dabaspet National Highway. Even before the shock of that accident had faded, the Nelamangala tragedy has once again raised serious concerns over road safety and reckless driving on highways around Bengaluru.
