NEW DELHI: The Winter Session of Parliament concluded on Friday, overshadowed by heated disputes, physical confrontations, and police complaints during its final week. The session, marked by intense arguments and interruptions, has been described as one of the least productive in recent times. The key point of contention revolved around remarks by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, which led to a fierce exchange between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress.

During a discussion on the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Indian Constitution, Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the Rajya Sabha, comparing the BJP and Congress approaches to constitutional amendments. He alleged that the Congress had altered fundamental constitutional principles for political purposes, whereas the BJP’s changes focused on enhancing citizens' rights and streamlining governance.

Shah’s statements sparked outrage among Congress members. A clip shared by opposition leaders highlighted his remark about taking Dr. BR Ambedkar’s name becoming a “fashion” among the opposition. Shah commented, “Taking Ambedkar’s name repeatedly has become a trend. If the same dedication was shown towards chanting God's name, one could secure heaven for seven lifetimes.” This remark was interpreted as disrespectful towards Dr. Ambedkar by the opposition, leading to a war of words.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to Shah’s defense, using social media to accuse the Congress of undermining Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy and misusing his name for political gain. Modi listed several instances of alleged negligence by the Congress towards Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, asserting that Shah’s statements were factual and had unsettled the opposition.

The week’s parliamentary proceedings were further marred by disruptions and altercations. Heated debates escalated into physical scuffles, leaving some Members of Parliament hospitalized and prompting police complaints from both sides. The session ended on a note of division and contention, leaving key legislative agendas unresolved.
