Rain lashes parts of Oman; accidents reported, damage to public property

Wed, 25 Jan 2017 18:21:34    Muscat Daily

Muscat: Several parts of the sultanate received heavy rainfall on Tuesday morning. Rains also led to the cancellation of Muscat Festival events at Amerat Park and Naseem Gardens.

Damage to public property and road accidents too were reported.

The heavy rainfall led to flash floods, water logging and overflowing wadis in many parts of Muscat governorate. An ROP official said that some traffic signals stopped working including the ones at the Muscat airport flyover, near Oman club in Al Khuwayr and at the Sohar flyover junction.

The official said that several accidents were reported too. “One car that was heading to Seeb swerved on 18th November Street while four more cars were damaged in an accident near the Burj Sahwa roundabout. No injuries were reported. A vehicle swerved on the Muscat Expressway near Al Khoudh while a truck flipped on the Wadi Kabir-Darsait flyover.

“In Bidbid, a car swerved off the highway while two other vehicles met with an accident on the highway in Rumais in the wilayat of Barka. Two vehicles also collided in Saham.”

The official said that there were reports of trapped cars in overflowing wadis. “Traffic movement came to a halt between the wilayats of Dhank and Al Sininah because of overflowing wadis.”

He said that there was power failure in Shinas and a few lamp posts fell near the Qurm beach area.

“These systems affect the weather in both positive and negative way and cause rainfall and low temperature in Oman. Reduced formation of a depression system from the west has affected the amount of rainfall this winter,” the official said.

The official said more rainfall is expected now because there are now high chances of a winter depression.

Muscat festival events cancelled

Heavy rainfall led to the cancellation of Muscat Festival events on Tuesday evening.

“The festival venues remained closed on Tuesday. The activities will resume on Wednesday,” an official from Muscat Municipality said

ACA warning

The Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA) has advised residents and citizens to follow the weather bulletins and take precautions before venturing out. The low pressure system will continue to affect the weather until Wednesday, according to the Met office.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, a PACA official said that the reason behind late rains this winter is because of weakened low-pressure system and winter depression.
