New Delhi: A Delhi court has granted Umar Khalid, former JNU student, seven days of interim bail to attend his first cousin's wedding and meet relatives. Khalid, who is accused in the larger conspiracy case related to the Northeast Delhi riots, will be out of jail from the morning of December 28 to the evening of January 3, 2025, upon furnishing a personal bond of Rs 20,000.
Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of Shahdara District Court issued the order with specific bail conditions. Khalid is allowed to meet only family members, relatives, and friends and must stay either at his residence or the venues of the wedding ceremonies he has mentioned. The court also barred him from using social media during this period.
In his plea, Khalid highlighted that the haldi and mehendi ceremonies are scheduled for December 30 and 31, followed by the wedding and dinner on January 1 at Masjid Ishaat Islam and Kalindi Kunj, respectively. He also expressed a desire to spend time with relatives, particularly his sister, who is traveling from the US. Khalid assured the court that he would not attend the wedding reception in Nagpur and would remain in Delhi.
Khalid has been charged with offenses under the Indian Penal Code, the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act, the Arms Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The charges allege his involvement in a pre-planned conspiracy to incite riots in Northeast Delhi between February 23 and February 25, 2020.
While his regular bail plea remains pending before the Delhi High Court, Khalid sought interim relief from the trial court. On December 6, his counsel argued before the High Court that he has either completed the sentences or served over half of them in 34 of the alleged offenses against him.
